It varies significantly by material, square footage, and whether old flooring has to come out first. A single room with a straightforward install can sometimes be finished in a day, while a whole-home job — or one that needs subfloor prep or a wood acclimation period — takes longer. The only way to get a real number is a walkthrough of your specific space.

Acclimation adds time before installation even starts

Solid and engineered hardwood needs to sit inside your home and adjust to its temperature and humidity before it’s installed. Skip or rush this step and the boards can expand, contract, or gap after they’re down. This acclimation period happens before any installers show up with tools, and it shouldn’t be shortened just to hit a faster timeline.

Tear-out and subfloor prep

If old flooring has to be removed first, that’s added time before the new material goes in at all. What’s underneath matters just as much: a subfloor that needs leveling, or shows signs of moisture, has to be corrected before installation, not covered up. Our subfloor prep and moisture remediation work handles exactly that before a single board goes down.

Square footage and material type

More square footage means more installation time, in a fairly direct way. Material matters too — hardwood and natural stone generally take more time per square foot than laminate or vinyl plank, since they involve more precise cutting, fitting, and finishing work. A one-room vinyl refresh and a whole-home hardwood install aren’t on the same timeline, even at similar square footage.

Done right takes the time it takes

We won’t shortcut acclimation, subfloor prep, or moisture checks to hit an arbitrary deadline — those are the steps that determine whether a floor holds up. Over 20 years of installs has taught our team where the real time in a project goes, and where it can’t be rushed.

For residential jobs specifically, our residential flooring installation team can walk your home and account for all of these variables — material, square footage, tear-out, and subfloor condition — before giving you a timeline. Planning a hardwood job? Our hardwood flooring page covers what that process involves.

Can a single room really be done in a day?

Sometimes, yes — a smaller room with vinyl or laminate over a subfloor that’s already in good shape can move quickly. It’s the exception, though, not something to count on before a walkthrough.

Does removing old flooring always add significant time?

It adds some time in every case. A simple pull of an old floating floor is quick, while an old glued-down floor or subfloor damage underneath takes longer to remove and correct.
